Griffin/Wiley Beer Tour of Germany

June 27- July 13, 2005

Bamberg

Tasting Notes:
Wild Rose Keller Beer -- B minus

Mahrs Pilsner -- simple, clean, crisp
Mahrs Ungespundet -- also simple, lager
(but excellent food -- fresh pfifferlingen (mushrooms) with
veal sweetmeats in cream sauce over tagliatelle above)

Spezial Keller Beer (self service out of plastic kegs, not all that interesting
-- get one from a waiter so you get it from wood -- should be better)

At Spezial Brewery:
Ungespundets -- sweet and malty
Rauchlager -- moderately smoked, very drinkable but also complex
Weiss -- very neiss, caramel, light citrus at end
Marzen (Rauch) sharper darker and stronger smoke than lager

Schwanen Brau, Ebings
Dunkels -- nice malt, a little sweet.  Good breakfast beer.
Zwickel -- hint of sweet, hop bite, light

Goller
Hefeweizen -- very nice, creamy, clove and banana
Rauchbier -- Great nose, deep, long, subtle smoke, better than spezial.
Dunkel -- best so far.  doppelbockish, smoky with hint of chocolate and bitterness.
(also good food, had shislick -- smoked pork kebob with bacon, liver and onions
in paprika herb sauce)

Kaiserdom
Schwartz? Roasty, slightly sweet but dry, good
Keller -- so so

Fassla
Lager -- buttery deep malty maibockish, nose better than taste
Pils -- grapefruit
Marzen in Bottle.

Cafe Absenthe (great place for breakfast and bottled beers)
Huppendorfer Voll -- nice malty lager
Weltenberger Kloister Barock Dunkel -- Prunish with dry finish

Hummel (in Merkensdorf)
Keller beer -- appley marzen
Rauch -- similar to Spezial in smoke, thin body

Drei Kronen (Memmelsdorf)
Keller -- iced tea, dark
Stoffla Rauch **** Best in Rauch *** bacon with brown sugar in a glass.
Weiss -- redish, some off flavors, a little sour with banana and clove

Maisel (Bamberg)
Weisse -- unfiltered, nice and sweetish with clove
Keller -- pretty standard

Kloisterbrau
Braun -- not much there, and little alt-ish
Dunkles -- like sprecher, buttery, dark
