Griffin/Wiley Beer Tour of Germany

June 27- July 13, 2005

Bamberg to Bayreuth
Tasting Notes:

Hartmann in Wurgau

Felsenkeller -- nice light beer with a hint of whiskey malt
Felsentrunk -- helles lager with hint of smoke
1000 Schwartz - licorice,  dark
Weizen -- light, nice banana and clove
All beers were nicely made

Venison Stew and Wild Duck with potato pancakes.
Both excellent!

Felsen means cliffs and the area around this region is filled with limestone? cliffs, caves, and interesting pinnacles.  We would have loved to have actually seen the felsenkeller if one does exist! Thomas looked everywhere for beer in them thar hills.

Pottenstein

Tried 2 out of 3 local braus after seeing the big cave.

Hufesen dunkels was drinkable, had an appley start but pretty unremarkable after that.

Mager dunkels was too bitter.  The Helles was "hoppy" according to Thomas, and "dirty sneaker water" to me.

Bayreuth

We arrived to a massive downpour (that broke the heat) and to find there was a street fair on the main drag, which obviated our need to find out exactly where Becher Brau was... they were on the street!

Bayreuther
Zwickel - dark, unfiltered, creamy, a little sweet, nice body
Dunkel - ok
Maisel Weisse (not as good as Schinner)

Becher Brau
Dunkel - excellent, very sweet and dark, hint of toffee, almost a doppelbock
Unfiltered Pils (Vollbier) - nice, not dry like most Pils

Schinner
Altbayreuther braun - dark, a little hint of smoke, roast, wood.
very nice.
Would have been more impressive before Becher.
EdelWeisse -- nice clove with a touch of sourness.

Fresh roast ochs sandwiches (Top pic is remainder of ox on spit)
