phone: (514) 288-8377

Good Mussels
and Venison Burger with Goat Cheese (they were out of wild boar and elk)
Don't remember the beers being all that...
but a good stop halfway up the hill to...

DIEU du CIEL
29 Laurier Ouest (West)
ph: 514-490-9555

http://www.dieuduciel.com/

Stout (5%) Very  nice, roasty, great body
Imperial IPA unimpressive, thin, little malt
Winter Solstice (aged 1.5 yrs in bottle) Barleywine, nice but a little metallic
(we will be back)

LE RESERVOIR
9 Duluth Est (East)
ph: 514-849-7779
http://www.geocities.com/brouepub/reservoir.html

Excellent little Chez-Panisse like restaurant with their own beers.
Go for lunch (apparently turns in to hip, trendy, smoky bar in evening)

Lunch was rocket salad with bread, excellent balsamic vinegar and olive oil dipping plate
pork with cherries or cranberry
I forget what I had but it was good!

the Cerises (7%) beer was great -- 4 stars, sour like a lambic
Dunkleweisse 3.5 stars
Noire -- was a stout, like a guinness, just a smidge watery
Pale Ale -- was a good approximation of Sierra Nevada

L'AMÈRE À BOIRE

2049 St.-Denis
ph: 514-282-7448

Imperial Stout -  excellent
Porter - roasty and nice, not bitter, nice sweetness like the imp stout
Rousse - better than the usual red, but not much going on
Blanche - a nice wit, low spice, a great summer beer

VICE et VERSA

6631 St-Laurent (At St-Zotique)
tel 514 272 2498
www.vicesetversa.com

Barbarie Imp Stout -- thin, metallic
Cuvee Forte -- a whisp of Belgain
Alchimiste Brune ecossiaisse
Not really impressed with any of these beers

Back to
DIEU du CIEL
29 Laurier Ouest (West)
ph: 514-490-9555

Clef de Champs
"Biere de siegle aux herbes and ecosse"
Similar to Sahti -- wonderful piney smell/taste and sweetish

Also note a good bottle shop just down the street:

Supermarché Rhaman 151, Laurier Ouest
Le Sergent Recruteur
4801 Boulevard St. Laurent
Montreal, QC H2T 1R3

Tried to go to the new location of Sargent Recruiter
http://www.sergentrecruteur.com/site.html
looks like a nice spot only a few blocks down the hill from Dieu de Ciel

they were open!
for a pre-opening party!
wouldn't let us in unless we knew the owner...
alas!
the taps looked purty from the outside...

hopefully the new address will help others find this -- still listed at old address on most beer geek pages

BRUTOPIA
1219 Crescent
ph: 514-393-9277

the closest brewpub to the "conference" that was our reason for being in Montreal.
So we spent a good deal of time here :)
I think I drank the Scotch -- was quite nice!

BTW the Indian Buffet across the street was quite good!
The largest selection we had ever seen

FROMAGERIE ATWATER
134, Atwater Avenue
Montreal, Quebec, H4C 2G3
Canada
phone: (514) 932-4653

La Fromagerie du Marche Atwater -- the cheese shop at the Atwater Market.
Do I really need to say more?
Best place to buy biere in the city.  Also has cheese, meat products like boar sausage, and olives.  Fresh bread upstairs.

(NOTE: you ARE able to bring cheese and sausage back to the US now.  The mad cow scare seems to be over and since they stopped giving you food on flights, they recommend bringing your own snacks)

Our favorite bottled beers are "Bieropholie" brand
loved McKroken Flower (scotch)
Calumet smoked bock
also IPA (with date? in top left)
and Imperial Stout

and of course Unibroue: Can you go wrong?
Frigante was excellent a triple or quad, get it if you can!
We no longer get Eau de Benite here and there is a line "Irresistable Brune" that they contract brew for a local supermarket chain (Metro) see below

Barbarie and Alchemist are dissappointing (in the bottle
atleast)

LE CHEVAL BLANC
809 Ontario East
ph: 514-522-0211

Saison - excellent - 4 stars
Blanche -- subtle, complex, a little eggy, 3.5 stars
Imp Stout -- ok, but amere a boire is so close!!! pales in comparison 3 stars
Framboise -- don't bother 2 stars

L'ILE NOIRE
342 Ontario Est
Montreal, QC H2X 1X8
(418) 982-0866

Not a brewpub, but a nice place to drink.
Our non-beer geek friends like the ambience here.

I found a bottle of McAuslan/St Ambroise vintage there, and it was YUMMY
also McAuslan Apricot was on draft  -- good fruit beer! full apricot flavor and tart

LAST DAY: A TRIP TO CHAMBLY
before getting to F&F, we stopped in town at

Bedondaine & Bedons Ronds

http://www.bedondaine.com/index_en.html

255 rue Ostiguy
Chambly, Qc
J3L 2Z7
450 447-5165
It was their opening night.
The entire town was there.
The beer was EXCELLENT!

5 kinds on tap:
Blonde, Hefewiezen and Rousse -- all very nice

Two superb beers were
Le Bedon --  atleast 3 stars
oatmeal stout, very nice and drinkable, full taste

and the real treat not to be missed!
L'Ensorceluese - 4 stars
Honey and spiced ORANGE PEEL? beer
sweet and orangey in smell and taste, burgundy colored

FOURQUET FOURCHETTE
1887 Ave. Bourgogne, Chambly
ph: 450-447-6370

http://www.fourquet-fourchette.com/en/index.html

A great side trip out of Montreal.
The atmophere is renaissance dressed wenches and servants in an old church? brewery.
Could be considered cheesy, but the food and beer are excellent.

We started the meal with a sampler platter (buffalo carpaccio, caribou jerky, smoked trout and bacon terrine, and smoked salmon)
which went well with the Raftman.

This was followed by an onion soup that was the best we have ever tasted.  The broth was rich and covering the soup was strong melted raw milk cheddar.
Went well with Blanche de Chambly and Frigante.

For dinner we had the roast caribou which was meaty and served in a Raftman sauce.
The venison was also good in Quelque Chose.

For dessert there was a Rhubarb Crisp.
This was a sheet of Rhubarb with pie crust crisp layers and fresh cream with vanilla bean specks.
After this Thomas proclaimed his love to the waiter.
He also failed to write down what his final beer was.
I think we tried the Emphemere Cranberry which was on draft and possibly something else, maybe Don de Dieu just to end the night on a strong note!

Final stop:
Metro supermarket (back near B&B Ronds)
for Unibroue's Irresistible Brune.

I think I lost a page of notes...
Also apologies that only some beers have ratings.
We were drinking at the time...jw
